I'll never forget the valuable lesson I learnt from this project: don't let meeting your client's wants distract you from helping focus on their needs ๐ฎโ๐จ
They're essentially a freelance marketplace like Fiverr or Upwork but Singaporean. My creative director and I pitched 2 different approaches for this commercial. They liked it enough to award us the project but in the process of many meetings, the storyline just snowballed into a whole other beast of its own.
It was exciting to be heading up a production, finally ๐ I had my hand in more than I ever did before:
1. Liaising with the client
2. Producing
3. Scriptwriting
4. Casting the Actors (with a provided database)
5. Coordinating the Wardrobe
6. Storyboarding (a basic one)
7. Shot list Planning
8. Coordinating the schedule for the cast and crew
9. Sourcing and Scouting a Location
As a team of filmmakers, we felt we could've done it a little more justice. However, the client was pleased that we consistently met their requests and serviced them well enough to keep us for their next commercial ๐ so I'd file that as an unqualified success.
I'd share the video but they've since replaced it with their more updated advertising campaigns (including our second production with them ๐).

Admittedly, filming over 80 shots at roughly 15 different locations was a tad more demanding than anticipated ๐คฏ Still... I wouldn't have traded this experience for anything ๐ It wasn't until later that my boss mentioned this was actually the longest and most ambitious production the company had ever done!
I'm only saddened that this was an internal video for HSSE (Health, Safety, Security & Environment) purposes. Therefore, I can't share the video since it's private and confidential to the client.
Lugging film equipment while wearing a safety helmet, safety boots, and earplugs (sometimes) was certainly an experience ๐ not to mention being in a country located on the equator ๐ฅต I was a camera assistant on this shoot for the days working on the industrial sites.
As we began filming at the office locations, I was switched to keep track of the takes and other assistant producer work. I was also responsible for directly sourcing our main talent along with a needed last-minute featured extra cast member.
Fun fact: The client was so pleased that they presented her with a more long-term offer for future casting!

With just 1 month to throw together Kuching's largest filmmakers' collaboration yet, every team was scrambling! Typical of government-commissioned projects, I'm afraid ๐ We're talking 3 different production houses with over 2 dozen freelance crew members.
The Unit Protokol, Istiadat dan Pengurusan Acara Negeri (UPPAN) arranged this as a surprise commemorative birthday short film for our state governor.
Our team at Filmco (our shorthand for the company), was charged with casting and wardrobe. We must've gone through over 20 auditions for the lead alone! We even had to cast over 30 actual school kids from the school we were filming at ๐ต๐ค
The only thing that ran longer than the casting list was the inventory for the wardrobe! It was quite the task to source some 1950s-appropriate attire. The school uniforms were easy - just not to steam iron for 2 hours straight ๐ Plus, they needed all hands on deck so there was also a lot of additional helping with crew work (mostly lugging things about).15 Aug, 202015 Aug, 2020My First Day Working A Film SetAssisted video productionShadowed a Camera OperatorIt was actually my second day on the job but also my birthday. I love my industry so much. I just wanted to jump in!
I worked as a camera assistant under the DP (Director of Photography). The video was for a non-profit COVID-19 children's instructional mask video. It was mostly managing the camera and audio equipment; also, lots of BATTERIES. So, it was a solid 8 months before the world, and the beginning of my career could take off. The director/founder/boss asked how soon I wanted to start and I excitedly expressed "immediately".
Day 1 happened to be straight into a location scout AKA site recce for a pandemic awareness mask video for children. It was a cool way to start and get to know my new boss and colleagues too :)
The boss assigned me to shadow him and he took me through the client consultation - getting the direction and important elements. I was tasked to take notes. Afterwards, I was briefed on the project and equipment I needed to manage for the shoot taking place the next day!
